Interesting story on the B-Mets web site:
What's On The Horizon? --- Experts Claim Depletion of Mets's Farm System
"Mid February brought the much touted Johan Santana to the NY Mets but what does that mean for the parent club’s affiliates? Many pundits would have you believe the building blocks for the future were shipped off to Minnesota in the deal (see Gomez, Guerra, Humber, and Mulvey) leaving the coffers depleted. Is this truly the case? Is there any hope here in Bingo town this summer? "

Tartans, I used to live 40 minutes from Binghamton, my family still is there...My brother goes to the B-Mets games....
All they can do is rebuild, nothing we can do about it now, we have received a pitcher who may help this team go far this year.....

Only 1 of those 4 kids traded away were heading for B-town anyway.
Gomez would have been in AAA/MLB
Mulvey AAA maybe started at AA.
Humber AAA/MLB
Guerra was the only kids targeted for AA.

I am not too worried about the farm system. The Mets had to get Santanna, even if they had to sell the farm. Things always happen, and the Mets will be fine.

Who knows, there could always be a Mike Piazza in the mix. What round was that guy selected in? Trying to predict baseball prospects' development is like trying to predict the weather 3 months in advance; you might have some slight idea what's going to happen, but you're sure to have a few surprised in the mix. The Mets traded away three pitching prospects, pitching prospects are notoriously volatile. Is there a pitcher that does not end up getting Tommy John surgery in this era. The key fact is they got the best pitcher in the world for no proven players, and they kept their so-called best prospect (Fernando Martinez). Who knows, that best prospect may end up being the next Alex Escobar, remember him? My point is, when you're getting a proven stud, as is the case with Johan Santana for mere prospects, you must make the deal. I don't care if they traded the entire Binghamton franchise to Minnesota, including the ball boys and Mascots. We got Johan freaking Santana out of the deal, there's always next years draft/dominican signings, the farm will rebound while we now have the best pitcher on the face of this planet.

great article. People go on hype of prospects or the round they are selected. Most of the time they are wrong. It's nice to see and hear about guys in the farm system you don't normally hear about.

THE Mets STILL HAVE TALENT. PELFREY AND SMITH WOULD BE HIGH ON THE PROSPECT LISTS IF THEY DIDN'T PITCH THOSE MLB INNINGS LAST YEAR. HERNANDEZ AND PARNELL ARE GOING TO CONTRIBUTE THIS YEAR ALSO. THE METS SYSTEM HAS A LOT OF BULLPEN STRENGTH IN IT. DON'T FORGET ABOUT A CATHER NAMED MCRAW DOWN THE PIKE, HE IS A LEFTY WITH A NICE STROKE.

With Santana and Maine heading up the rotation for a while; and with a number of big contracts coming off the board in the next year or two; plus the facts that we have extra draft picks this year means that the farm may be somewhat depleted but will be filled up quickly and in reality should not hurt the ball club. On top fo that there is always the free agents to fill the holes.

It's near impossible to determine how good or bad a MLB prospect is going to be. It's not like the NFL where these kids are constantly scrutinized in college, the combine and all the workouts that they perform leading up to the draft. When you have a chance to land a proven ace, such as Johan, you can't let potential get in the way. Especially considering that Gomez was the only one that had gotten extensive playing time in the majors. Humber had only a few spot starts and I don't remember seeing Guerra or Mulvey on the the big league level except maybe in spring training. Some of the players down in the minors might wind up being very good or they might not, either way, you can't pass up a chance to land one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball (in his prime) because of what a couple of kids might turn in to.

They have the team to win now. I would rather take the run now then hope those guys pan out and they make a run in five years.

The difference is that the media does not pay attention to college baseball the way they do college b-ball or football. and that's because those kids jump from college to pro ball, college baseball players do not make that some kind of jump.

Football and even basketball players are getting critiqued before they even become teenagers in some cases. Baseball isn't the same. The fact that the media doesn't pay attention is exactly my point. They don't have commentators and analysts poking and prodding them. The point that I was trying to get across is the fact that it's harder to pre-determine talent on a pro level in baseball than it is in football, because high-school and college players don't get 24/7 coverage like they do with those other sports. Which is why I said that trading away four prospects for a proven Cy Young winner is an opportunity that you can't pass up.

Little off the subject line, but I saw that Duaner pitched today and got the win...Pitched 1 inning. Do you know by chance how he looked? I guess we will not know until tomorrow on how he feels....
