Watching the All-Star game made me a little sad. I loved seeing Brandon Roy get all that playing time and he played great. But watching him play along side Chris Paul in the backcourt made me realize just how huge that missed opportunity was a few years ago.
The last couple drafts for the Blazers have been outstanding. But I'm afraid their draft 3 years ago will haunt them for the next 15 years. Maybe not as much as the Jordan draft, but passing on Chris Paul for Webster & Jack has to be one of the biggest blunders in Blazers draft history.
It's hard not to wonder how much fun a starting lineup of Paul, Roy, Outlaw, Aldridge & Oden would have been. Thrown in a bench of Sergio, Rudy, James Jones, Frye & Przybilla and this team would be an instant contender starting next year.
I've heard rumors of the Blazers going after Paul as a free agent. I doubt Paul would leave the up and coming Hornets, but you never know. Maybe they could atone for their blunder and get that lineup afterall. Or maybe they could package Webster, Jack, Blake and their lottery draft pick next year in some kind of trade for a point guard. I doubt they would be able to trade for Paul or Deron Williams, but maybe someone like Andre Miller would be available to trade for. Miller's no Paul or Williams, but he's a very good distributer and would add some nice experience to the young nucleus.
I guess for now I'll just have to settle watching Paul & Roy play together every year during the All-Star game. But it sure would have been nice if the Blazers hadn't screwed up that draft 3 years ago. They might be working on a potential dynasty as it is, but whatever they are working on it's not as good as if they had also drafted Chris Paul. He's the best point guard in the league, and will be for the next 15 years!! And he should have been a Blazer.
