I think they should start Aldridge to pound the ball up the middle, bring in Hughes when inside the 20, and use Allen in a variety of ways. Allen could be the 3rd down back. Why do we need a featured back? All three are great runners. It would better for each guy to gain about 70 yards a game  instead of having one guy that gets 100+ per game. That wears on one guy throughout the season. If they platoon these three guys and rotate them based on the situation, they will have fresher legs late in the game and late in the season. I think all three guys need to be used almost equally. In my opinion, Hughes is the best RB, but the other guys are too good to sit and I think you start Aldridge because he is the junior in the group. We should be more concerned with who is going to be blocking for these guys rather than who is carrying the ball....LOL

I think they should stick w/ Hughes right now, and have him be the focal point of the offense. He's a punishing North-South runner, and I think that's what they need behind a suspect offensive line.

If they can get the o-line figured out, then they can start using Allen a lot more in a variety of ways, a la USC w/ Bush a few years ago, or the Eagles w/ Brian Westbrook. Move him all over the field, that sort of thing.

I'm not really sold on Aldridge right now. I'll see how he develops, but even behind a good line I think I'd rather see Hughes and Allen get the bulk of the carries.

Getting the offensive line in order is obviously the first priority.
With that being said, I think Aldridge deserves the chance to be the number one back. He has the skills to be a feature back in ND's offense, and I don't he was fully recovered from the knee injury that cost him 5 games his freshman season.
While Hughes runs with authority and always falls forward, he lacks the breakaway speed to turn average gains into touchdowns.
Everyone knows how explosive Allen can be, but he seems to struggle to pass protect and break tackles. I would like see him used similarly to how Rocket was used, but with more chances to run the ball from the backfield. I just don't think he can carry the load for the whole season.

Weiss seemed to tip his hand in the spring game when he gave Hughes 22 carries compared to 11 and 6 for Allen and Alrdridge respectively.
The bottom line is that ND has three running backs can thrive if the offensive line plays like they are capable of.
