Since its very difficult, if not impossible, to compare golfers from different eras, whosw swings should go in the top 10 of all time, thus eliminating the need to decide the best.

I am surprised I missed this the first time around. That's what the theology thread will do to ya. This is a great question. I was going back to find the greatest of all time thread and came across this.
I guess I would have to start with Hogan...the man that some (including Tiger) say may be the only man who ever truly OWNED his swing.
As far as mechanics and capability. Tiger.
As far as fluidity...Snead, Jones, Els, Couples. Smooth as silk!
Sorry, I really don't know that much about it after that.

Fundamentally and tempo wise, I go with Payne Stewart. Just the first to pop in my mind other than the obvious Jones and Hogan. I don't think Tiger's swing is as good now as it was in the 1996 Amateur.
I think his coaches have transformed him into doing some unconventional things because of his strength. Most of us couldn't duplicate some of the positions he is in, in his swing. I for one, although very strong armed, couldn't hold the angle on descent as long as he does. Centrepital force makes my release happen way earlier than his.

How is Freddy Couples not on that list? He may not be the best player but I love his swing.
In your late 40's you have to wonder how a swing (as effortless as Freddy's seems to be) how he can still be one of the longest hitters in the game. Love watching that guy swing! Did I hear somewhere recently that he swings his driver at 80%. LOL!
I would add Adam Scott to the list of great mechanical swings along with Tiger.

Tiger Woods?
Tiger is a great putter, has excellent distance control with his Irons, and can get it up-and-down from the ball washer. But a great swing? Hardly. The guy barely finds 50% of the fairways, and often has to fall back on Irons or a 5 Wood to keep it on the short grass (Hoylake, Southern Hills, etc., etc.).
Adam Scott? Good grief!
I’ll put the following list against all comers. And, for you "nubies" . . . research any unfamiliar name on the web. You’ll see.
And, with regard to No.1 . . . it ain’t even close, the "Wee Ice Mon" remains miles ahead of anyone who ever held a club. Period.

Ok, I've had some time to think about it. I think we will all have many similar votes for the obvious ones like stated all over this board. So with no further ado...
1. Ben Hogan - Hogan is the most influential figure in the science of the swing.
2. Sam Snead - There isn't a golfer around who wouldn't like to come back in his or her next life with Snead's serene swing, one of golf's most admired.
3. Bobby Jones - Jones never took a formal golf lesson, yet his swing is a work of art.
4. Ernie Els - The Big Easy says it all.
5. Adam Scott - Watch Scott hit a few balls and you'll be amazed with his perfect posture and how he can swing so hard without tensing up. His swing is like a symphony -- all pieces working together to create a beautiful product
6. Steve Elkington - Tour players voted Elkington's swing the best of their generation. "Steve's movements are proper and fundamentally sound."
7. Retief Goosen - Called the Little Easy and no wonder. May be the best imitation of Els on the course.
8. Payne Stewart - Gets lost in any debate because of his short career. Effortless, long and smooth.
9. Tom Watson - Admits watching Snead's swing when he was younger; inevitably, that influenced his own swing. Watson harbors one of the most rock-solid swings, and his superb swing sequence enables him to generate exceptional power.
10. Xxxxx Xxxxxxx - Superb balance and tempo. Comparable only to Hogan. BTW, this is me. It is my response and I can put anyone I want at number 10.

Ya know, everybody you all have listed have incredible swings. They are for the most part classic swings. Slammin Sammy and Tom Purtzer probably have the two best swings of the group. But I kinda like some of the non classic swings. Guys like Trevino and Furyk and Player with what he used to do with the step to the target after impact. No way to really copy those guys because their swings are so individualistic. They found a way with their own style and ability to accomplish what all the other greats you all mentioned. That is to have exactly the same impact position. Look at all the great tour pros. The one thing they all have in common is virtually the same position at impact. there's a million ways to swing the club but the ball only reacts to that last millisecond at impact. I just like to see a guy who has figured out how to make what he has and make it work.

My list and in no particular order:: ::
- Tom Watson - with a shoulder turn beyond belief and very smooth
- Payne Stewart - a thing of ballet beauty
- Tom Weiskopf - tallest player on tour had a great smooth extension
- Fred Couples - even though he aligns left and swings right...still effortless
- Sam Snead - will always be know for a fluid swing
- Bobby Jones - from the film I saw, that was smooth, rythmic
- The Michel Boys (Adam, Scott) - refinement as each year goes by
- Julius Boros - was he even swinging??
- Mr. Hogan - all those hours on the practice tee paid-off
One of the worst swings producing the best results .... Arnold Palmer.

I'm very surprised Mr. 1 Iron mentioned George Knudson. I expect very few people remember or even heard of him. I have Knudson's book "The Natural Golf Swing". In that book, Knudson said he used Hogan as the starting point for his own swing.
Knudson saw how Hogan always finished on a flat left foot, always finished in balance. That's what he wanted for himself, and he got it, but it took a lot of work.

The best unconventional swing with fantastic results? The best self-taught swing? Look no further than Moe Norman.
He hit just about every shot dead straight. Hogan himself couldn't believe it, said it was impossible for anybody to do that, that it was a mistake for anybody to hit a dead straight shot. Hogan walked away after a while saying "Keep on hitting those mistakes, kid".
You all know the stories about how Hogan never watches other people hit balls. Well, he watched Moe Norman.
They say Moe, on the practice range at a Canadian Open when he was 73 years old, took an extra stiff shaft from Jonathon Byrd, a PGA Tour player, and started hitting dead-straight 270 yard shots, one after another.
The pros nowadays have every club matched to their specifications. I assume what happened here was Moe saw a guy roughly the same height as his, and said here, let me show you guys something, grabbed the guy's driver and started striping it, right then and there.
And another thing, I saw him swing on video/TV, he also finished on balance, every time.
There's this story of the time he played with Sam Snead, they came to a hole with a creek crossing the fairway. Moe takes out his driver, Sam says whoa, you can't carry that creek, Moe says I'm aiming for the bridge. Sure enough, he carries the creek via bridge.
