Race Gender & Culture in Sports (Comments Wanted)

It seems to me that many have problems acknowledging that sports and culture go hand in hand. Indeed it seems that at times, when all else fails in human relations, we've been able to fall back on sports as our one unifying point. But sadly, every time someone highlights a point that remotely discusses race or gender in sports it seems that people get all up in arms about how pure sports should be and how immune sports should be to all this "race and gender BS." Notwithstanding, sports cannot be any more pure and impervious to these issues that affects the cultures of its participants. Take for example the Olympics, which I think could be a good jump-off point for discussion, since it has less to do with race and more to do with ideological differences, what's your response to the argument that the Chinese government's overall cultural and political positions towards its neighbors and the rest of the world should have no bearing on opinions and expressions of people on the 2008 Olympics?

I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

Feel free to post whatever you want and I will give you a five star rating, I really want to hear other's thoughts on this.
