Will IU Ever Find a Knight Replacement..??

April 3 = =

I have a great deal of respect for Bobby Knight as a Basketball COACH.  As a person, he falls a little short.  His teams were always very competitive, yet he very seldom had a squad full of "blue chippers" like some of those other schools had.  He taught the game well.  His players "learned" and "listened".

Unfortunately, IU is still looking for his replacement.   Maybe if they hadn't allowed the set-up of Bobby Knight, they would still be looking.  Maybe Tom Crean is the answer.... maybe not.

Will IU Ever Find a Knight Replacement..??

I am pretty much sold on the fact that you can never replace a legend.  (Wooden, Thompson, Carril, Smith, Rupp) All of their teams fell off until someone came in and brought in a system that the team believed in.  Great example is Roy Williams.  Long time asst for Dean, leaves develops his own style, comes back, respects the history, but completely different style of play.  The coach that comes in will have to convince the fans that while being proud of your teams history in that sport is all well and good, but in order to move on you've got to let go.  Hard thing to do especially in state like the Hoosier state where there are so many small towns that don't necessarily keep with the times.  Unfortunately it looked like they had that in Kelvin Sampson.  That was a different type of IU team with a "New Identity."  Those kids played for him and respected him, very evident especially after he was asked to resign.  They could have made a good run in the tourney with him there.  Now it looks like their stars are going to "exit stage right," and thats just unfortunate.

Good Blog.  Give one up for The Ohio State University.  Hopefully Koufos and Co. stick around.

I like the comment.....  maybe what IU has to do now, is let the coach do what he does best.  I'm not saying that Bobby Knight was th best thing since sliced bread because he certainly had his flaws.  As a basketball coach, he was great.  Did it with lesser players.  As a man, he struggled to control, and it did him in eventually [ he was set-up ].  I do like your idea.... IU and the alumni has to allow the new coach to grow into the role.... HIS role.  His style.  I like that.  Maybe Crean will be the coach to stick around..... maybe not.

Thanks for the insight .... maybe somebody has a different take..

About Little Bit of This & Little Bit of That
The name of this Blog really is "A LITTLE BIT OF THIS, AND A LITTLE BIT OF THAT..." in honor of a great Cleveland Sports Writer, Hal Lebovitz. His column touched the hearts of many sports enthusiasts throughout the U.S. My goal is certainly not to compete with such a great giant, but to have a place to record thoughts and views on a variety of subjects, from sports to politics. Everyone is welcome to read and provide comments as they feel fit. I only ask others to be fair to everyone else and no personal attacks. Enjoy Yourself..!! And as Hal would close each column . . ..... Stay Well and See You Somewhere, I Hope.
