Little Bit of This & Little Bit of That

One of the best things about living in the ugly snowy north, is you get to put away the clubs for 6-months. Most everyone else continues to play while us northerners only dream about it. At the same time, we have an opportunity to start fresh each spring. We don't have those nagging bad habits carry-over from one season to the next. It's great starting with no bad habit.... and just letting them develop as the year progresses.

This year I'm going to try putting with a different style. . . . I'm going to look directly at the hole, align myself, check the ball and club, look at the hole, and stroke it while looking at the hole. I've read about this technique in GOLF Magazine before and I'm now going to try it. This is counter to what I've done all my life, so it should be interesting. We'll see just how much magic is left in this "Louisville Slugger" of a putter.

As the year progresses a progress report will be provided.

I wonder if anyone else has tried this..?? hmmmmm . . . . this might be a good message board thread.

Good blog dgm.. While on the west coast, I'm north of the 49th so I'm in the same boat re getting on course.

I have used the technique that you are adapting to and found it very useful....my speed vastly improved with this routine ....
it made me commit to my line and get a much better feel for the speed required by looking at the hole.

What type of grip do you use for putting.....I switched 4yrs ago to left hand low and have improved.

So you've been using the same technique that I'm planning to use. That's Great..!! I really don't putt poorly. In fact, since I started using the baseball bat putter, I've been putting fairly well. I don't putt much credence in the concept that the more you spend on a putter the better a putter you'll be. I can't imagine that a person is going to putt better with a $300 putter, as opposed to a home made putter. Mechanics are mechanics. Expensive mechanics aren't any better than inexpensive mechanics.

Anyway, I did read a couple of magazine articles on putting by looking at the hole instead of the ball. I just figured I'm old enough now where it certainly won't mess with my game. Anyway, I'm giving it a try....especially since you' indicate it does work..!! As go progress through the year, I'll take the time to keep you updated, or ask for advice....not blame type advice.... the blame will all be mine. Just someone to bounce ideas off. Since I've putted using the standard "stare at ball" technique all my life....I'll let you know how I adjust [ if at all ]. Your question regarding grip.... I've always been left-hand high. ... but my right hand hardly grips the club...so I just about putt left hand only. This way I have no questions about which hand did the damage.

I am very conventional when it comes to putting. I have had the same putter for over 20 years. I've purchased 4 or 5 over the years and play with them for awhile. But a couple of misses from 3 ft or so and it's back to my old TP Mills. I am a decent putter so I don't play around much with my stroke. I did put a little fatter grip on last year, not KJ huge, but larger than stock. It has helped me TREMENDOUSLY with my grip pressure. The other thing I have done is with my putting practice routine. I putt for a least 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. I place tees at 3, 6, 10 and 15 feet and putt 3 balls from each spot until I make them all at each spot and then work back towards the hole. This, too, has helped TREMENDOUSLY! I had started to get the YIPS from 3 foot and practicing and recognizing the putt has postponed the inevitable for awhile longer. I paid around $30.00 for my trusty putter and have another $400.00 worth sitting in the closet. The $30.00 putter paid for them all, many times over!

I agree that "mechanics are mechanics". The only way to improve mechanics? Practice, practice and more practice.

I know just how you feel about a trusted putter... no matter the price, you trust it. There was a store going out of business across the street from my old, old work place so I stopped by at lunch and bought a $3.00 putter, white metal putter. I still have it, but I gave it to my wife so she could enjoy th success with it. About 25 years ago, I put a wooden shaft on it and sank EVERYTHING with that thing. As you know I now putt with my Louisville Slugger.... it cost me the price of a grip and a shaft. I think we've both discovered, price is not what makes a good putter.
