Those Hambricks ... scary folk

Troy Hambrick is going to prison? Consider me not surprised.

My first job out of college was writing for The Tampa Tribune's Pasco County bureau, where I covered the Pasco High football team led by brothers Darren and Troy Hambrick. Darren was clearly the better all-around athlete -- future NFL linebacker, 20 ppg in basketball, one-man contender for the state track team title -- but Troy was the better football player. One of the great things about covering high school football is when you run across a larger than life player like Troy Hambrick. He literally felt he should score every time he touched the ball, and he damn near did. He was bigger, stronger and faster than everyone else on the field. Watching him was a privilege.

But you knew major trouble was waiting. I just thought it would find Darren Hambrick first. He was such a bad guy that at one of his track meets he literally punched a girl right in front of me. I was interviewing him, this girl came up and said something silly, and he smashed her. Then he turns to me and says, "Sorry, she's on crack."

I've never known if he was serious or kidding about the crack, but I've never forgotten the incident -- would you? -- and I've always wondered how long before Darren Hambrick found trouble. Turns out, it didn't take long.

And now Troy has found prison. What a waste of talent those brothers turned out to be.

Doyel, that is assuming that Troy Hambrick was a talent.  He never managed to get past an aging Emmitt Smith in either Dallas or in Phoenix.  He spoke like he was a talent, especially in the beginning, yet never was able to translate it into success on the field.

Darren had some potential, but never realized it.  Otherwise the Panthers and Browns would not have taken a look at him.

but still, to stick around in the NFL for a few years you've got to be talented... even if youre not a superstar, you are VERY talented to even hace a shot of being in the league

Those Hambricks ... scary folk

The fact that Troy Hambrick had an ego and thought he could and should be the starter for the Cowboys is not really a crazy thing if you think about it. To be successful at any elite level you have to have a huge amount of self confidence and an ego that can let you play past any downfalls.

But to get down to the bottom of it, yeah... he was a marginal NFL running back at best.

That's a crazy story about Darren blasting that girl.. I had never heard that before. I actually thought he showed great flashes at times as a player.

It really is a shame that people with such potential let their lives waste away.

Those Hambricks ... scary folk

How original!!!  So I suppose every team received this type of treatment for players who were marginal at best and get busted 10 years after their playing career is over...
