Despite being a writer for quite some time, and a sports fan for even longer, Ben Heller never put the words "sports" and "writer" together on a professional-ish basis until 2006, when he wrote about Fantasy baseball for MLB.com. The job was enjoyable, despite not being able to use words like "failed," "steroids," or "Anna Benson."
Like most Bostonians, Ben was drawn to baseball at an early age. According to legend, his first trip to Fenway Park involved a snowstorm, Carlton Fisk's return as a member of the White Sox, and a Jim Rice grand slam. According to box scores on the Internet, this is impossible, but Ben prefers to keep his memory intact.
Unlike most Bostonians, Ben has never started a fight with a Yankees fan, doesn't own anything made by Abercrombie & Fitch, never drove a Jeep Cherokee, and can't fathom why anyone would listen to the Dave Matthews Band. But boy does he love seafood.
Ben’s career as a writer got a kick-start at Boston University, where he wrote insanely long, hyperbole-filled album reviews, and a well-received, hyperbole-filled weekly column. Following college, Ben moved to Los Angeles to try to "make it in the picture business." 12 months (three of which were spent waiting in traffic) later, he moved to New York, where people with glasses, books and a fondness for walking across busy streets with headphones on feel more at home.
Since moving to New York, Ben has made his career as a copywriter. He has written many words for many different products. In fact, there's a decent chance he wrote the banner ad you ignored at the top of this page. (Don’t sweat it, he didn't read it either.) In his spare time, Ben has written about a number of topics for a number of publications. And no, he’s not the Ben Heller who played college hockey. Nor is he related to Joseph Heller, Zoe Heller or that Heller who used to play for the Miami Dolphins.
When not writing about his personal history in the third person, Ben can be found in Brooklyn, where he lives with his wife, Lara, and dog, Doc. He can be reached at benatspin@gmail.com, and for more of his adventures, visit benatworkblog.blogspot.com. |
