Seahawks report: Getting inside
As the season wore on, it was clear Wagner was a good, hard-nosed basketball team that had the ability to win close games. It was also clear the Seahawks were not a great shooting team and, as Wagner coach Mike Deane often said, the Seahawks just couldn't shoot free throws. Both of those things came together to end the Wagner season with a home loss to Sacred Heart, which eventually lost the league title game (that would have been played AT Wagner) to Mount St. Mary's. Wagner was the No. 2 seed and had beaten LIU in the quarterfinals. Sacred Heart came out of the 3-hole to beat Wagner for the first time in three games this season. The Seahawks, who never led in their final game of the season, went just 12-for-21 from the foul line, falling just a shade under 60 percent from the line for the year. They also went 1-for-12 from 3-point range in the first half, finishing 5-for-24 from behind the arc in the most important game of the season. "I've said this would get us at some point this season," Deane said. "This was just a bad time for it to happen." Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
