Gauchos report: Getting inside
The question at UC Santa Barbara isn't what now. It's who. The Gauchos will have to go on without newly crowned career scoring leader Alex Harris, a senior guard who was named co-Big West Conference Player of the Year after averaging 20.2 points per game this season. Harris helped the Gauchos set a school record with 23 wins and seize a share of the Big West championship. They stormed back after losing three of their first six conference games, winning nine of their last 10 to earn the No. 1 seed in the Big West tournament and an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament. Harris scored 20 points in an 83-68 loss to Mississippi in the opening round of the NIT to break UC Santa Barbara's career scoring record. He finished with 1,696 points, eclipsing the old record of 1,687 set by Carrick DeHart in 1990. UC Santa Barbara coach Bob Williams has to wonder who will fill the void when Harris is gone. "Everybody is going to have to pick up the slack a little bit because you don't replace your all-time leading scorer with just one guy," Williams told the Santa Barbara News-Press. "Most likely, we're going to look for a lot of guys to contribute more." Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
