Ospreys report: Getting inside
Before the 2007-08 season began, North Florida head coach Matt Kilcullen said that his primary goal was improvement. "How do we determine that? I don't want to gauge it by the number of wins," he said in November. "I just want to see us get better on both ends of the floor." The Ospreys (3-26, 1-15 Atlantic Sun) did not improve in the win column over 2006-07 (3-26, 1-17) and they still failed to win any road games, but they did show improvement in other areas during their third season in Division I. North Florida averaged 59.4 points and 34.8 rebounds this season, a modest increase over its 54.9-point and 33.0-rebound averages a year ago. This season's team also made more 3-pointers and blocked more shots. Unfortunately, the Ospreys also saw an increase in turnovers per game and a decrease in the number of assists and steals. Kilcullen, who is 90-164 in nine seasons at North Florida, sounds satisfied that the team did show improvement. "Unfortunately, society looks only at the won-loss record and they see only (three) wins and they say, 'That program stinks,'" he told the Florida Times-Union. "We are building something. It's going to take time, but I think we'll get to where we need to be." Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
