The most topsy-turvy Arizona basketball season in recent memory ended with a thud.

The Wildcats, who lost seven of their final 10 games before the NCAA tournament, were ousted on Day 1, losing 75-65 to West Virginia at Washington D.C.

Afterward, no one was sure who will be coming or going before next season.

Interim coach Kevin O'Neill, pegged several months ago as Lute Olson's eventual permanent successor, is gone.

"There's been an air of uncertainty about me for the last 25 years," O'Neill said.

But O'Neill's loss seems minor as stacked against other defections.

Freshman guard Jerryd Bayless, projected as an NBA lottery pick, opted for the pro game. But Nic Wise, a junior next season, and incoming freshman Brandon Jennings are likely to make up for that loss.

The subtraction that isn't so easy to cover up is that of sophomore Chase Budinger. His versatility and scoring prowess at 6-foot-7 leaves a glaring void on the UA roster.

I can't express how happy I am when I look at the frontcourt situation next year. There are three starters in Jeff Withey, Jordan Hill and Jamelle Horne, that should all play at their natural spots. No more being on the short end of the mismatches. Withey at 6'11, Hill at 6'9" and Horne at 6'6" all provide great size for their respective positions. Even better, they ...(more)

This topic started to emerge in another thread, and I thought it deserved a thread of its own...

How does next season rank in terms of the most important in UA history?  Is it the most critical?  If not, what season was (or what season will be)?

I personally think next season IS the most important in school history.  UA has struggled recently and has been a bubble ...(more)

CBS's Gary Parrish is reporting that coaches from other programs are contacting Emmanuel Negadu's high school coach to gauge his interest in transferring. When a player hasn't asked for his release, it amazes me that this could take place. It smacks of tampering. I hope that Emmanuel will recognize that Arizona remains his best opportunity to play right now and pursue a championship ...(more)

Although it had become very clear in the last few weeks that Pastner was headed to Memphis, it's now official.  UA has already been working to fill his vacancy, so it shouldn't take long.  It'll be critical, IMO, that we get an assistant who is a strong recruiter and who has a deep connection to the AAU circuit.  I understand that they are down to a couple of candidat ...(more)

So I wanted this to be a funny post, but I will say this first.  All these Freshman entering the draft is getting pretty old.  I wish the NBA would just do away with the stupid rule.  If someone is good enough to get drafted after one year in the NCAA, they are probably good enough to get drafted out of high school.  I would rather watch players who *want* to be in school, rath ...(more)

It was announced that Miles Simon will not be returning next year as an assistant. This probably doesn't come as a surprise to most, and infact it shouldn't. While I like Miles Simon, it was never apparent what he brought to the table for the team.
