Be patient, Oklahoma State will wrangle solid coach

Happy Monday morning, basketball fans.

You probably spent the weekend recovering from the long season, enjoying your first Saturday off in months, taking your son to the circus and unwinding in general. Or perhaps that was just me. But if it was you and me, then you're likely back at work now (like me) and unsure of what went down the past 48 hours because the last notable thing you remember is that Bill Self rejected an offer to return to his alma mater.

Yep, Self turned down Oklahoma State.

Which was good for Kansas.

And bad for OSU.

But it has been four days since that happened, and in this business a lot can happen in four days. I mean, Kentucky went from talking to Billy Donovan to introducing Billy Gillispie in a matter of 24 hours last April. That was the same month Creighton's Dana Altman accepted the Arkansas job, flew to Arkansas, talked to reporters in Arkansas and then returned to Creighton in like a two-day span.

So again, coaching stuff happens fast.

It can be difficult to keep up at times.

But it appears Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder was telling the truth when he said Self was his lone priority before last Thursday because he seems no closer to naming a coach now than he did four days ago.

In other words, you haven't missed much because this isn't happening fast. It is a patient and deliberate process that is going to serve as a serious test for this still relatively young AD as he tries to land the perfect coach that will both meet his criteria and appease his fan base.

And it won't be simple.

But the reason is simple.

The reason, quite simply, is Bill Self -- otherwise known as the grand slam hire that didn't happen.
