Amazing? Agonizing? Flip a coin, 'cause both apply to title game

SAN ANTONIO -- Joey Dorsey dropped to his knees.

So yeah, he actually collapsed.

Like his team in general.

Joey Dorsey can't help his team from where he's sitting. (AP)
Joey Dorsey can't help his team from where he's sitting. (AP)
And as the ball rotated through the air -- spun and spun like the heads of thousands of Memphis fans -- Dorsey hoped and wished and even prayed a little from his helpless position on the bench, tried to imagine a scenario under which what he thought was happening wouldn't really happen. But it happened.

Man, did it happen.

Mario Chalmers swished the long jumper, just drained it to complete one of the great comebacks in NCAA tournament history. And suddenly Memphis and Kansas were headed to an overtime that seemed improbable three minutes earlier, an overtime that would ultimately solidify this title game as a classic.

Kansas 75.

Memphis 68.

And what will you remember most from Monday night?

Chalmers' OT-forcing 3-pointer?

Or Memphis' OT-forcing choke?

Or both?

In the end it'll likely depend on your rooting interests -- whether you live on the left or right side of the Mississippi River, whether you typically yell Rock Chalk Jayhawk or Go Tigers Go. For Kansas fans, this was Mario and the Miracles and a jumper as ridiculous as it was pure. For Memphis fans, this was up nine points with less than two minutes remaining and an unfathomable, self-inflicted undoing that'll be impossible to get over.

They were the better TEAM ... though Memphis certainly had some talented INDIVIDUALS!

Talk about never giving up, no matter the odds.

And to borrow a phrase from our Orange Bowl MVP, Aqib Talib:

"I guess they gotta say we played somebody now!!!!"

The men's team got their headlines, and their promininently placed photo, yesterday, the day after they won their championship.

Last night it was the women's turn, and this morning, and afternoon, it should be the Lad Vol's turn to have the headlines, and the prominently placed photo on the website.

CBS - you've done the WCBB a disservice, and you should be asham ...(more)

A lot of credit needs to go to Sherron Collins and Mario Chalmers for a great defensive ball game. Chalmers was an absolute PEST off the ball getting his hands on everything. He had 4 steals but that doesn't even get close to the number of deflection he had. And then he made the game tying 3s. And those FTs. Could Mario jump to the lottery...maybe?

Collins also played great on-the-ball again ...(more)

Great game for the Jayhawks, they came through and won the game, congrats to the Kansas players, coaches, and fans.

Memphis had a great year they have delt with everything, from off the cout issues to constantly changing defenses from all teams, all year. i am proud to be a Tiger fan. The Tigers took everything that the Jayhawks threw at them, it was tough, the Jayhawks were tough, they ...(more)

deserves more praise for the game he played rather than the negative talk about the free throws he missed, i wasn't really cheering for either team just a close game but he played really good, however i think the NBA will be his next destination and his college career will end with a very sour taste.

Congrats Kansas. Of the final four teams, other than UCLA, I was hoping you guys would be the ones to win it. Your fans have been classy all year and haven't overhyped your team or been stupid homers like Mempiss fans and North Carolina fans. Enjoy the title. You earned it.

And Mempiss fans... Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

Memphis was a great team, with great players..but poor free-throw shooters.  Calipari's complacent attitude is what lost them the national championship.  "We will make them when it matters."  Is what he kept saying, well...did they?  The answer obviously is no.  In the moment that mattered most, forget the previous five games, in the moment that mattered most, th ...(more)
