Kansas wins title -- and could lose its Self in the process

SAN ANTONIO -- Yo, T. Boone. We ain't talking no drive-thru teller anymore. Forget the cashier's check. Go directly to whatever hedge fund you fancy and start withdrawin', pards.

Will Bill Self leave Lawrence and take his national title net to Stillwater? (AP)

Six million? Bill Self spits on $6 million. That's the amount Oklahoma State's Ol' Billionaire -- T. Boone Pickens -- is rumored to be willing to pay the Kansas coach just for putting his name on a contract to coach the Cowboys.

Once he does, Self could get into some really serious money. Six years for an additional $26 million in actual salary is a number that could set up Self's grandchildren's grandchildren for life. That's before Pickens offers to take, say, 80 percent of that money and invest it for Self.

That's what the great money managers do. Two years ago Pickens gave a then-record $165 million donation to Okie State. The New York Times reported that the money spent less than an hour in the university's account before being invested in a hedge fund controlled by Pickens' own BP Capital Management.

It is said to be worth $300 million now.

Monday night, then, was great for Self, bad for Kansas. The guy is going to make out like a bandit one way or another. Good for him. He deserves everything he gets. Five years into the job, Self won the school's third national title, first in 20 years.

Kansas? Athletic director Lew Perkins better have his short list ready.

What we're trying to say here, Jayhawks, is that Mario and the Miracles winning the national championship was about the worst thing that could happen.

To your program.

Pickens is the sweetest of Sugar Daddies. The noted corporate raider is nearing 80. He has preferred late in life to buy Oklahoma State, his alma mater, multiple championships in any sport possible, but mostly football and, now, basketball.

A Tulsa World columnist wrote in a weekend column what we've all been hearing here in San Antonio, that Pickens is going after Self the way Ahab went after whales.

Even if the money figure is not accurate -- some say it's a $10 million bonus -- the whole episode would be ground-breaking.

Maybe it's enough, Jayhawks, that you have your title. Maybe you're willing to wave a fond goodbye to Self.

If Self leaves, he needs his head examined.  Coaches who win titles no longer have to work to recruit, ESPECIALLY at UCLA, UNC, Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky.  Players want to go there.  When given the choice of Kansas, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, or Stillwater, OK where are the blue chippers going??????  Come on, they will NOT choose OSU.  That is not until Boone can pay them to ...(more)

I may be mistaken, but isn't Dodd a Mizzou alum? If so, then that would explain his negative column and his attempt to rain on the Jayhawks parade. Geez, this must really be a bad day for Dodd and Mizzou. How many trophies are sitting in Columbia?

Everyone is talking about Self leaving, who will KU replace him with? I believe it will be either Bruce Pearl or Coach Cal. Both guys are great coaches and would love to have the recruits that go to KU. Cal started as a coach at KU so his ties could run deeper than any other candidates.

Not particularly worried about Kansas...  no offense to Self, but it is not all coaching...  in recruiting for OSU he'll not get some the players that a successor at KU will get or Roy gets or Coach K gets...  OSU can become a powerhouse school in basketball...  but honestly, you're a kid with talent and North Carolina or Duke or Kansas or UCLA wants you, but OSU is ask ...(more)

Why is it that every time we come close or make it to the promised land, the last two times the Jayhawks have had to endure coaching speculation? I guess Roy Williams got his wish; he won his championship at North Carolina, which was a realistic goal. Bill Self at OSU? Sure it's his alma mater, but come on now.

Texas and Kansas, at least for the foreseeable future, are the future of ...(more)

Bill Self has always been a big fan of the Pro game.  Now that the Sonics are moving to OK City I wouldn't be surprised if that is what brings him back to his home state.  I don't think the OSU job is for him, no matter how much money T.Boone throws at him.  In addition to being a lateral/backward career move, you got to remember, they fired Sean Sutton in a classless way ...(more)

For all of you Rock Chalk Kansas fans who are sure that there is no way Bill Self will leave the beloved Jayhawks for Stillwater, remember that just because he says he'll never leave doesn't mean he believes what he is saying.  For evidence, in 2003, right after UNC poached ol' Roy, a chicago radio station asked Self if he he was happy, Bill stated he was and had no plans to le ...(more)
