Talk is cheap? Memphis' Calipari will convince you otherwise

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- It was just a book.

Nothing more.

By the time Calipari is done talking, the ref may change his mind. (US Presswire)
By the time Calipari is done talking, the ref may change his mind. (US Presswire)
But it explains everything you need to know about John Calipari, everything you need to understand how he made himself what he is today. The book was sitting there on his desk, surrounded by notes and memorabilia and various other things. It looked new when I first saw it, which was about a year ago. And I've always thought the title of the book was perfect, the exact title you'd expect to find on Calipari's desk.

The title?

Words That Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear

'He's so convincing'

I spent four years of my life covering John Calipari.

You probably need to know that.

I wrote for the Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis before I left for CBSSports.com in July 2006. My first game on the Memphis beat was Rodney Carney's first game as a Tiger (a 70-63 win over Carmelo Anthony and Syracuse on Nov. 14, 2002). My last game on the Memphis beat was Carney's last game as a Tiger (a 50-45 loss to Jordan Farmar and UCLA on March 25, 2006).

In between those dates, I dealt with Calipari in some form pretty much every day and got to understand him so well that I could literally build stories around things I thought he'd say if I asked a certain question before merely inserting his actual quotes later.

Yes, Calipari can be that predictable.

But that's not the reason I'm writing this column.

The reason I'm writing this column as Memphis prepares for the Final Four is because Calipari is doing a lot of talking this week and it reminded me that in my years of dealing with coaches -- young coaches, old coaches, basketball coaches, football coaches, whatever -- I have never met a more convincing talker than him. All of you heading to San Antonio will realize this soon.

Why are Memphis fans so offended when everyone says they suck? IT IS THE TRUTH.

2 years ago, everyone and their mother were saying that #1seed Memphis would beat #1 seed UCLA... Then UCLA kicked the crap out of them in the Elite Eight with a far worse team than we have now..

The truth is that Memphis will fall on Saturday. Plain and simple. The Bruins will set you arrogant idio ...(more)

With all four #1s heading to San Antonio in '08, and with two #1s and two #2s having made it to the final four in '07, I think we've entered an era in college basketball during which the elite teams are consistently outshining the competition and will continue to do so for one main reason: the NBA's recent prohibition against players under the age of 19 jumping straight to the p ...(more)

A couple of years back I was at the Memphis airport awaiting the arrival of my son who was flying in from Boston. Lo and behold the first guy off the plane was John Calipari. Having never seen him up close and personal, he took me a little by surprise. As he passed by and I being a huge idiot blurted out "Hey John!" He stopped and looked me in the eye and said "Hey, how's it going?& ...(more)

First of all, Calipari is a boor, end of story. Secondly, your Bill Walton bashing needs to be clarified somewhat. You spouted off that Walton's 66.5% single season Field Goal Percentage wasn't even among the top twenty five. Technically that is true, in that there are a number of players who had higher percentages, but attempted far fewer shots. The fact is that Bill Walton made 232 of 349 attemp ...(more)

First off, great job Gary, a 3 page post!

I agree that a Cal has really pushed the "the world is out to get us" agenda. Cal is a salesman, he would be sucessfull at what ever job he did, cause of that ability to convince.

I also agree with you,  a plethera of basketball fans agree, the tigers have what it takes to win a national championship. In other words, ...(more)

Video Bruin is trying to be Andy Kaufman and take on Memphis.  Remember the meeting with Jerry Lawler and Kaufman?  Anyway, UCLA will be lucky to beat the most talented team in the country- aka Memphis.  When Memphis wins, Video Bruin and Ultimate Bruin will be sulking into their beer mugs in Westwood, and will forever lament UCLA's historic 3 consecutive Final Fours WITHOUT a ...(more)
