Davidson's Curry puts on Sweet 16 show fit for a King

« Back · 1 · 2

As good as Davidson senior point guard Jason Richards is -- and he'll make some money overseas -- he's not keeping opposing teams from ganging up on Curry. Nor is anyone else in the Davidson lineup. There's a reason Curry has scored 77 of Davidson's 130 second-half points in the NCAA tournament:

The Wildcats don't have anybody else to do it.

And every team they play knows it.

And still it's happening.

This time it happened against Wisconsin senior Michael Flowers, a two-time pick for the Big Ten All-Defensive team. Flowers has manhandled the likes of Drew Neitzel and Eric Gordon, experience which he thought had readied him for Curry:

"Preparation for this game has been going on my whole career at Wisconsin," Flowers had said Thursday. "At the end of the game I want (Curry) to be breathless."

Curry was tired, no question about it. He played the first 31 minutes without a rest, coming out only after scoring those 16 points in 6½ minutes to give Davidson a 63-46 lead. When Curry came out for good with 57.9 seconds left, the tournament-record crowd of 57,028 gave him a standing ovation -- including the Wisconsin cheering section, which understood the greatness it had just witnessed and had the grace to acknowledge it.

Curry's father, former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, also stood and cheered. So did Davidson coach Bob McKillop and the rest of the Davidson bench.

The only person not standing and clapping was LeBron James, but that's OK. By then the best player in the world was gone.

And I'm assuming the best player in the world doesn't wear No. 30 for Davidson.

All Virginia Tech fans are simultaneously clapping for Curry and booing Va Tech's coach Seth Greenberg.  This is one sad Hokie.

Dell Curry, one of Va Tech's greatest players ever, just wanted his son to attend his alma mater.  Greenberg told Stephen he could walk-on, then maybe get a scholarship his second year.  Dell, Stephen and the rest of the family told Green ...(more)

Curry is unbelievable, absolutely lights out.  I love watching him knock em down but Doyel has seemingly overlooked a couple players and more importantly the overall team effort of Davidson. I'm sure Doyel was busy trying to figure out how to exaggerate a Lebron quote or something.........

Anyway, the biggest difference between Davidson and MSU or Indiana is the movement of

And what makes it that much more unbelievable is that he looks like some kid down the street from me...what is he, like 160 pounds?

The guy is unbelievable - absolutely unbelievable!  It'll be interesting to see him go up against Rush and Robinson.  The best of luck to him - we're all rooting for him!

I know I wont be the first person to bring this up and I know there's a lot of reasons to not say this, but I hope some Big Ten fans (of which I am one) finally realize how weak the Big Ten is.  It's not that teams like Wisconsin, Michigan State, Indiana (Go Hoosiers) etc. aren't good, but there is a serious need for the Big Ten to transform some of the trends in their coaching and recruiting ...(more)

To all the Herb Sendeks of the coaching fraternity, you know, those that fatten their records from scheduling teams like the Sisters of the Poor, the Homeless of San Diego, etc....Davidson did this right.  Going to Chapel Hill (lost by 4), going to Duke (lost by 6), going to NC State (lost by 1), goint to UCLA (lost by 12), has prepared Davidson for this, and you shouldn't be THAT surpri ...(more)
