Go ahead and whine -- Heels deserve to be in N.C.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The notion is crap.

Roy Williams has made this perfectly clear.

So you can talk about his home-court advantage all you want, but just don't expect him to play along. Because the game happens on the court, between the lines, and he's never seen a fan come out of the stands and stick-back a miss or block a shot. N-E-V-E-R.

And the rims are 10 feet from the floor wherever you play. This much, Williams knows for certain. And that's why he rejects the theory that his North Carolina Tar Heels will benefit in any noticeable way from playing just 142 miles from their campus, so much so that he looked out at every single one of us here the other day at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena and proclaimed he -- and I quote -- does not "believe that crap."

Naturally, that crap was taken to Rick Pitino.

For the record, the Louisville coach does believe that crap.

"Tell Roy to get on a plane for the first time and let's play the game at Freedom Hall," Pitino said Friday. "No, I don't think there's a home-court advantage; I think those are mostly mannequins dressed in powder blue."

Oh no he didn't!

"I say this in all honesty," Pitino added. "It's a very strong home-court advantage, but they deserve it."

There's a game scheduled Saturday night, one between traditional powers led by coaching legends. There are pros on each roster, former McDonald's All-Americans and future stars. And regardless of anything anybody else might suggest, just trust me when I tell you this East Region final could be decided by the "home" crowd.

That's how college basketball works, you know?

When all things are equal, the home team usually wins.

And North Carolina is the home team in this set-up, thanks to the selection committee placing UNC in Charlotte. Which is where the Tar Heels ought to be, by the way. Don't get it twisted. They were the No. 1 overall seed in this NCAA tournament, the obvious top seed for the East Region. So while in other years that would've meant an Elite Eight game in New York (2005), New Jersey (2006) or D.C (2007), this year it means an Elite game in North Carolina, and North Carolina should not be blamed for the NCAA's scheduling.

Maybe the state of NC should never host any tournament games.  Just in case UNC or Duke or any other school in the state happens to make it through the tournament.  Maybe we should just have all the games in Alaska so it'll be truly neutral.  Or maybe they should decide on the sites the day after each game to make it fair.

This is a non issue.  Yeah obvious ...(more)

Parrish, please remove your lips from Williams'.......well, you get the idea.  Actually, from the drivel you write about UNC (believe it or not, there ARE other teams in this tournament), Williams might be performing a "service" for you!  Either way, it is really disgusting, uncomfortable, and you two need to get a room.

home so much?  What about Texas playing at home all tournament?  I think UNC's record is pretty good coming out of other regions.  I think UNC's record is due to having Dean Smith and Roy Williams.  Great teams see it as more of a challenge to play on the road and actually do better on the road.  teams with poor coaches can only win at home.  UNC may well lose to Loui ...(more)

You are sooooo right!  I mean, the NCAA put those games in Charlotte AFTER it selected UNC #1 in the East, right?

No, actually.  You have to be a moron to think that this is a meaningful topic for a sports debate.  Carolina plays in the state of North Carolina all the time--they aren't undefeated in those games.  Perhaps some of you have noticed.  UNC got th ...(more)

The only ones who will respond to Parrish with disagreement are those who think he might, just might, be trying to say UNC had a greater possibility to lose a game without this advantage.  After the WSU game, I am inclined to believe UNC can adapt to any situation, any circumstance, and it wouldn't make a hill of beans difference where they played.  They will win the National ...(more)

I think the committee put very strong 2 & 3 seeds in the East regional because they thought that Carolina had an advantage with no more than bus rides.  I think that what's really bothering Pitino: the idea that Louisville got stuck in a regional where they have to beat Tennessee and the overall #1 seed just to get to the Final Four;  the idea that they were sort of a pawn in th ...(more)

Gary, to quote Sports Night, "You're so full of crap it's coming out of your ears."

Roy Williams was quoted today as saying, for the umpteenth time, it didn't make any difference where they played.  Whereupon Pitino responded, fine, let's play in Louisville.

If college bowl games aren't played in the home team's stadium, the NCAA t ...(more)
