Officials change score of UCLA-Texas A&M a day later

INDIANAPOLIS -- Texas A&M pulled within two of UCLA on Sunday. Too bad the game ended Saturday night.

The NCAA clarified the score of the top-seeded Bruins' second-round victory over the Aggies, saying the officials waived off Russell Westbrook's dunk as time expired and the final was 51-49 instead of 53-49.

UCLA's Josh Shipp blocked Donald Sloan's drive in the final seconds and Westbrook rushed up court for an emphatic dunk as the Bruins celebrated.

It turns out Westbrook didn't make it to the basket in time.

"As the officials were leaving the court, they waived off the basket, ruling the ball was still in Westbrook's hands when the clock expired," Hank Nichols, national coordinator of men's basketball officiating, said in a release Sunday. "Amidst the activity courtside, there was a misinterpretation of the signal. But the ruling on the court was that the basket should not have counted, making the final score 51-49, not 53-49."

The Bruins (33-3) will face Western Kentucky in the West Regional semifinals Thursday in Phoenix.

Screw the 2 meaningless pts- the NCAA should suspend the refs who didn't have the guts to make an obvious call on Sloan's shot. He was fouled by not one, but two UCLA players. Photo's confirm this.

Gutless bastard refs...

This is old news and it didn't change the outcome of the game, but it also isn't normal behavior for the NCAA.  What if the game had been UCLA - 48, Texas A & M - 49 before the no-call that resulted in the dunk?  If the officials had ruled the game over with UCLA winning 50 - 49, would they have changed the result the next day?  NO!  It& ...(more)

It looked to me that this shot was obviously after the buzzer. I saw the highlights and was shocked to hear the announcer say it counted.

Why is this a "Story" to report on? Nevermind that its a headline.

I guess the news director took Easter off. Billy Bob the janitor is writing the stories....

Thanks for the two day old news update.  That dunk to end the game meant a lot more than two silly points on the scoreboard, some over-used cliche about a nail in the coffin comes to mind.

Two teams showed up, one team went home.  Next stop for the Bruins....Sweet Sixteen.  Nothing more to see here folks.

The refs r helping the refs in every game. They have helped them at least the last 7 games it is getting out of control. UCLA could have lost if not for a completly wrong no- call.   UCLA wont get to the championship game so it is OK.

I don't know who's more overrated-UcLA or the Pac10? I live on the east coast where they play real basketball, but I've been to LA about 3 or 4 times this college b-ball season and I've had an opportunity to see UcLA several times. After each game I hear what Dickie V and the other sycophants have to say about UcLA and I go away shaking my head. I can't believe they're talking about the same ...(more)
