NOTES & QUOTES FROM CBS SPORTS’ COVERAGE ON SEPT. 2
CBS Sports’ Dick Enberg and Mary Carillo on the Williams sisters
Enberg: There is no question that Venus and Serena Williams are the most successful sister act, not just in tennis, but in the history of all of sport.
Carillo: At least they are back out there playing. And they have each won a major this year…If they played more their rankings would be higher and they would be, in my mind, one and two in the world. They deserve to be known as two of the all-time greats. But obviously they don’t have the numbers to back that up yet because they don’t play the way that Steffi Graf, who won 22 majors; Chris (Evert) and Martina (Navratilova) played for 20 years and won 18 majors each. I’d love to think that these two could… One of them could easily win a second major this year by winning the U.S. Open.
