NOTES & QUOTES FROM CBS SPORTS’ COVERAGE ON SEPT. 1
- CBS Sports’ Mary Carillo on Agnieszka Radwanska early in the first set:
“The nicest thing to see when you’re watching someone play is belief, and this kid has it…She acts as though she belongs.”
- CBS Sports’ Bill Macatee after No. 30-seed Agnieszka Radwanska defeat of No. 2-seed Maria Sharapova:
“That part of the draw was already fairly wide open except for Sharapova, now it is in total disarray.”
- ”PICKING THE BRAIN” of CBS Sports’ John McEnroe on the lost art of volleying:
“Yes, I know the complaint. No one comes to the net anymore. What has happened to the art of volleying? Well, here’s my theory: The ball is being hit harder than ever before. Their learning technique at an earlier age has become more important than ever. My solution: smaller courts. Look, no one expects Little Leaguers to play on fields the size of Major League ballparks. The same goes for kids on a hockey rink, football field or a basketball court. So why tennis?
By downsizing, little kids, who are not strong enough to cover a full-sized court, will have a fighting chance and it will encourage young players to come to the net.
If you know me, that alone makes this an idea worth trying.”
- CBS Sports’ Mary Carillo and John McEnroe on Andy Roddick’s impressive win over Thomas Johansson in 1:24:
Carillo: “That was a massive performance!”
John McEnroe: “It was a massacre - incredibly one-sided!”
- Andy Roddick to CBS Sports’ Mary Joe Fernandez on his fast play in post-match interview:
Roddick: “Gotta go and try to find myself a hot date later so I get off the court a little bit faster.”
Fernandez: “I’m sure there are plenty of candidates out there.”
- CBS Sports’ Dick Enberg on Roddick:
“Andy Roddick, just in case there is any availability on a beautiful Saturday night in New York, promoting his availability.”
- CBS Sports’ Patrick McEnroe on American Donald Young after his tough loss to Feliciano Lopez:
“He’s got plenty of talent, plenty of game. He’ll hit the practice courts again. When you see him a year from now at the U.S. Open, he’s going to be a serious player.”
