CBS SPORTS AND JIM NANTZ PRESENT “JIM NANTZ REMEMBERS AUGUSTA: THE 1960 MASTERS®” ON SUNDAY, APRIL 8
A Look Back at Arnold Palmer’s Masters Win in Color – This Color Restoration Process, a First in Sports Television History
For the first time in television history, a sporting event that originally aired live in black and white will be re-broadcast in color. CBS Sports will broadcast JIM NANTZ REMEMBERS AUGUSTA: THE 1960 MASTERS® presented by RBS on Sunday, April 8 (1:30-2:30 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.
Jim Nantz, CBS Sports’ host of The Masters will look back at Arnold Palmer’s masterful win in 1960 when he birdied the final two holes to nip Ken Venturi by a stroke. It will be the first re-airing of Palmer’s historic win. The one-hour special will include an interview with Palmer as he watches the broadcast for the first time and provides vivid details of his dramatic come-from-behind victory. The show will re-air the original CBS broadcast hosted by Jim McKay.
Working with Legend Films, the leader in restoration and colorization technology, Jim Nantz Productions was able to colorize the original black and white footage from the live telecast through a process called color restoration. Legend Films makes a high-resolution digital copy of each original frame and then fully restores and colorizes each one. The colorization was done with the help of color film highlights of the event and also expert research of period photographs.
“Arnold Palmer is a legend,” said Nantz. “Re-broadcasting the 1960 Masters will give at least two generations of golf fans a chance to see what it was like when Arnold was in his prime. Even Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, both of whom know and idolize Arnold, have never seen a broadcast of him winning a tournament and all the energy that he created. And working with Legend Films to bring color to the telecast will take the viewers back in time to watch and feel this special day in Masters history – and now in sports television history too.”
