Patrick strikes crew member during pit stop at Indy practice

INDIANAPOLIS -- Rookie driver Alex Lloyd didn't break any bones in a hard crash during practice for the Indianapolis 500 that left him hospitalized.

Lloyd was taken off the track Friday complaining of neck pain. Though a CT scan showed no broken bones, he was kept at the hospital as a precaution.

Another accident Friday occurred in the pits, where Dale Coyne Racing crewman Charles Buckman was knocked to the ground by the front wing of Danica Patrick's car as she drove into her pit. Buckman, who was walking through the pits, was taken to the hospital with a concussion and cuts to his face and scalp.

He was initially unconscious after being hit, but regained consciousness before being transported to Methodist Hospital.

"I really don't remember how it happened," Buckman said. "All I remember was talking with someone on (Patrick teammate) Marco Andretti's team and then everything is blank from that point. I will be OK and hopefully back to work in a day or two."

Patrick, who drives for Andretti Green Racing, did not talk about the accident other than to say, "What happened today was very unfortunate, but what is most important to me is that Chuck is going to be OK."

There was also a minor crash involving rookie Mario Dominguez of Mexico, who was not hurt when his car tapped the inside wall at slow speed in the warmup lane. Dominguez was examined at the track hospital and cleared to drive.

Lloyd, the champion last season in the IRL's developmental Indy Lights Series, completed a lap at more than 223 mph and lost control of his Dallara in the first turn. He struck the outside wall with the rear of the car and continued into the second turn.

The 23-year-old Englishman was examined at the track's infield hospital, then taken to Methodist for further tests.

They are too busy yapping on the phone, or have no clue how to maneuver their oversized SUV through the parking lot.  If you do not watch out, they will mow you down just like in that movie Deathrace 2000.

The ignorance and sexism that I've seen in some of these posts concerning this story is just inexcusable and downright deplorable.  To those of you that make such posts, I hope they make you feel more like men, because I see this as overcompensating for some personal shortcoming or just plain bitterness because a woman is actually making it in a ...(more)

I don't know whether she was talking on the phone or changing her make-up, but she needs to focus on the road.

It's wierd that a lot of these people are acting like a driver hitting a crew member has never happened before, it happens multiple times every year. This is just giving everyone another excuse to bash women drivers, when this most likely is the first time a woman has ever hit a crew member. Get off her back people.

Especially the crew member. It's not like a 18 wheeler was blocking his view from the track. At some point you have to put this on the shoulders of someone who wasn't paying any attention.

The crew member was in the middle of the pit after all, and should be looking out for things like this.

But on the other side, it is practice.. I don't ...(more)

Watch the video from ESPN. She cut into the pit box BEFORE hers, nearly taking the wing off the car sitting in it's pit, and she was going way too fast for practice conditions. You can't even see the line for her pit box in the tape. Cutting a box like that is not even allowed during a race. This was a normal practice session, not a race conditions practice stop or else people would not be allowed ...(more)

Why he was walking through the middle of a pit during live practice is beyond me.  When pitting, Danica is supposed to focus on the pit and hitting her marks, she shouldn't have to worry about somebody standing the middle of her pit.  He shouldn't have been talking to somebody in another pit and should be paying close attention to what is going on, especially since she was coming in to p ...(more)
